Who Listens to Louis Armstrong Anyway?

The classic Louis Armstrong short Rhapsody in Black and Blue is reimagined (due, honestly, to limitations) as a one-man video piece. A ne’re-do-well sleeps through his household responsibilites and is knocked out by his nagging wife. While unconscious, he fantasises about a private concert with Louis Armstrong in a far away land, Quickly, the fantasy turns sour.

I encountered the origial video as a teen, thereafter imagining the film to contain extreme racial imagery (bones through the nose, striking a match off the back of a native’s head, etc.). Revisiting the video in undergrad, I decided to take it on as a project after realizing it wasn’t as “bad” as I thought. The resulting piece is almost Disneyfied in its treatment, thereby exposing the layers underneath.
